About Gilchrist’s

At Gilchrist’s, family is at the heart of our bakery.

Our grandad Ernest opened his first bakery in Leeds in 1951 and even though our bakery has grown, our aims and ambitions of producing fresh, great tasting produce still remains the same.

We are still using our Granny Gilchrist’s
original recipes.

Meet the Family

Our family have been perfecting the art of baking for six decades, now passed down to the 3rd generation of bakers. The three children went to work with their parents at a very early age before school and have grown with the business.

The Gilchrist Bakery Team

Ernest

Ernest Junior is the expert on our products and deals with our wholesale side of the business.

Jose

Jose bakes all our delicious sweet goods – all made by hand with care and love.

Derek

Derek oversees the business, the bakery, our shops and staff.

We have many years experience in baking delicious quality bread, with care and love going into every loaf of bread and product we bake.

Our products are baked by bakers – in the traditional way. We bake bread as we have done for three generations, using the traditional sponge and dough method (taking 18 hours). Every day, our skilled bakers hand mould all our rolls, pastries and cakes, ensuring that every batch is crafted to the highest standards and quality. We can safely say that there’s nowt fresher than a Gilchrist loaf.

Our ingredients are locally sourced - we like to support other local businesses to build a stronger local economy and community.

This is also better for our environment, as sourcing locally reduces the carbon footprint of supplies.

Folk come to us for their daily bread, satisfying breakfast and lunchtime butties and at our York Road bakery you can even sit back and watch the bakers at work.

We believe that bakers should go that extra mile to make you smile!

As a baker you see wonderful things, like a piece of dough going into the oven and coming out as a beautiful loaf.
